Vietti

Italy Piedmont Castiglione Falletto

Vietti winery is based in the small medieval village of Castiglione Falletto, the heart of Piedmont’s famous “Langhe” wine region. Here the Currado family carefully and patiently handcrafts lauded wines that are the result of a unique combination of sun and soil.

Vietti is the only estate in Piedmont to own vineyards in all eleven of the Barolo-producing villages. Many of the parcels are located in the region’s most historic and pedigreed sites.

Luca Currado crops his vineyards to low yields and is typically one of the earliest producers to harvest. Luca’s focus on terroir is reflected in his careful cultivation and organic farming of more than 25 single vineyards. Recently he eliminated equipment that measures acid and tannin levels in favor of a more intuitive, and wine-specific approach, and also stopped publishing tasting notes, preferring that wine critics and drinkers apply their own perceptions and preferences to his wines.  All of the Nebbiolo vineyards are farmed, vinified and aged with the intent of making Barolo.

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel. The wines are then racked into French oak barrels for the malolactic fermentations and finally moved into casks for aging, all of which vary from vineyard to vineyard. For example, of the single-vineyard Barolos the Brunate sees the shortest period of contact on the skins, the Rocche the longest. Similarly, the Lazzarito generally spends 3-4 months longer in French oak than the other Barolos.

Vietti is one of the great names in Italian wine. Its traditionally-styled Barolos are benchmarks of their type: magnificent, complex reds that, thanks to the Nebbiolo grape’s firm tannins and high acidity, can age effortlessly for decades.
