The small Burlotto estate in the Piedmont village of Verduno is run by Fabio Alessandria, whose great-grandfather Giovanni Batista Burlotto founded it in the 19th century.

During his seventy-seven years as a winemaker (1850-1927), G.B. Burlotto’s accomplishments were rivaled only by those of Biondi-Santi and Vega Sicilia, as he achieved superstardom in a world dominated by French wines. 

Like his ancestors, nowdays Fabio approaches the production in a way that is both classical and idiosyncratic—to extract the vineyard’s essential greatness. 

Hard work in the vines, long macerations, large open botti for fermentation, large wood barrels for aging. His wines are high-wire expressions for the Piedmont and Burgundy lover alike. If Serralunga is the Gevrey-Chambertin of Piedmont, then Verduno is the Volnay or Chambolle.

The jewel in Burlotto's crown is Monvigliero, a legendary Barolo vineyard which produces wine of great individuality and ageing potential.
