Roagna

Italy Piedmont Barbaresco

Since the middle of 1800s, the Roagna have been wine producers in the village of Barbaresco. Alfredo and Luca, father and son, take care of the estate.

In 1990s, they were able to buy two renowned vineyards of Castiglione Falletto in Barolo, the Pira and Rocche, along with a 15th century farmhouse that they revitalized to become a bed and breakfast named Casa Roagna.

Over 17 hectares in size, Pira remains the largest parcel owned by Roagna. The remaining vineyards are located in Asili, Montefico and Paje in Barbaresco.

Luca produces small quantities of Chardonnay using white grape vineyards located in Colli Tortonesi.

Although Pira is the largest vineyard of the estate, the name Roagna is synonymous with Paje, its flagship in Barbaresco, where the oldest vineyards on pure calcareous soils are bottled with the brand name Chrichet Pajé.

Other signature names include Pajé and Pajé Vecchie Viti – which is based on the vineyard age.

All the crus are aged for about five years in wood – except for Asili – which can be enoyed after aging approximately three years in concrete vats. Crichet Payé requires eight years in wood to be aged properly due to its calcareous origins.

Luca uses a combination of wood and cement to obtain the right ripening.

The Roagna love to describe their production style as traditional and innovative.

Without using chemicals, all the Barbaresco and Barolo wines are worked in an organic faschion.

The availability of Roagna wines is extremely limited each year.
