Schiavenza

Italy Friuli Venezia Giulia Serralunga d'Alba

The Schiavenza company is located in the heart of the Langhe, more precisely under the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba.

The estate was founded in 1956 by the brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria but the construction has more ancient origins. The vineyards were owned by sharecroppers even before the acquisition by the Alessandria family and, in honor of those sharecroppers, today the company is known under the name of “Schiavenza”.

Currently the management is in the hands of the second generation of Alessandria family: the sisters Enrica and Maura together with their husbands Luciano Pira and Walter Anselma take care of the winery.

The family properties include 9.2 hectares of vineyards in Serralunga, a small plot of 0.5 hectares in Monforte d'Alba and the Cru Prapò, Cerretta and Broglio. The Alessandria are not only producers of wine but also restaurateurs: in the last 19 years they have also managed Trattoria Schiavenza, an inn in the center of Serralung that, thanks to the traditional cuisine, attracts both local winemakers and tourists. The organic / biodynamic philosophy reigns in the vineyard and in the cellar. Cement tanks are used for fermentation. For aging, instead, they rely on large wooden barrels. The three crus, Broglio, Schiavenza and Cerretta, are the flagship products of the company. The grapes used in the production of these wines come from sites with the same exposure and in the cellar are treated in the same way as regards fermentation, maceration and aging.

The true skill of the Alessandria family lies in allowing the wines to fully express the characteristics of the Cru and of the vintage. The result is elegant wines, from which the pure expression of Barolo emerges.
