Terlano

Italy South Tyrol Terlano

Founded in 1893, the Cantina di Terlano is one of the most avant-garde producer cooperatives in all of South Tyrol.

Terlano is also a wine-growing village located halfway between Merano and Bolzano. Here the Adige flows through a wide valley towards the south-east. The village and the vineyards lurk on the reddish porphyry rock.

Because of its specific climate and geology, the area has qualified for a DOC designation of origin.

Its 143 current members cultivate 165 hectares of vineyards, equal to a total annual production of 1.4 million bottles.

Despite the important numbers, it is a small winery that has managed to establish itself on an Italian and international level and has received numerous awards.

With sites located at altitudes between 250 and 900 meters above sea level, choosing the right variety is a challenge. Lower sites are better suited to heavy reds, while all white wines achieve better results when produced from grapes that come from higher and colder areas.

White wines are the main production of the company (70%), these whites have the ability to resist and survive in decades. This longevity is due to the combination of various factors: high mineral content in soils, grapevines of important age, the care used in the management of the vineyards and the careful selection of the grapes.

The cellar is marked by the use of large wooden barrels and by the use of the “sur lie” method: the wines are left to age on the lees for years before being bottled. This slow maturation process gives the wines character and complexity.

In addition to “classic” productions every year Terlan offers a “rare” wine, aged for at least ten years, and designed to give visibility to a philosophy, dear to the company, which takes into account the longevity of the wines. An approach initiated by former winemaker Sebastian Stocker and which has resulted in today 100,000 bottles of vintages from 1955 to today.
