Marchesi Antinori

Italy Tuscany Firenze

Marchesi Antinori  is not only a family name, but one among the most enduring family businesses too. The history of this superstar italian wine company links that of a whole country. The florentine family has played a major part in the life of wine in the centuries now. Antinori has always been a prime actor in all the key radical change in which the wine sector has been involved.

Documents tell about a Rinuccio di Antinoro making wine in the countryside nearby Florence at the Cambiate castle already in 1184.

It was Giacomo Tachis, a piedmontese winemaker who worked along with Piero Antinori as a consultant since 1961, to have boosted the path towards innovation.

The cutting-edge winemaking know-how and tools have allowed Antinori to make wines able to compete with the Grand Cru of Bordeaux.

Outstanding outcome has originated from testing Cabernet Sauvignon planting and vinification, joining the local Sangiovese.

The birth of the great Supertuscans, red wines collectors and winelovers all over the world compete for, rewarded the hard work: the Tignanello in 1970 and the Solaia in 1978 (whose 1997 vintage peaked at the top of the yearly 100 Best Wines of the World rank published by The Wine Spectator in 2001).

Along with Renzo Cotarella, the managing director running all Antinori’s estates, Piero Antinori keeps on the way traced even more than 600 years ago.

The historical Prunotto winery in the Langhe, Montenisa in Franciacorta, Pian delle Vigne in Montalcino, joined the early estates set in the Chianti Classico district and the Castello della Sala in Umbria.

New investments has taken place in high potential regions such as Bolgheri, Maremma and Salento, during the last decades.

The ‘A’ of Antinori stands out several estates through California –amongst which the well-known Stag’s Leap, led by a joint-venture between Marchesi Antinori and Ste.Michelle Wine Estates-, Chile, Hungary, Malta and Romania. A further expansion has taken placeis in ‘classic’ Tuscany and nearby Cortona.

Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, Piero’s daughters, are the 26th Antinori generation committed to lead italian wine once again to an even higher pinnacle.
