Luigi Oddero Figli

Just above the winery of the Oddero family in Santa Maria di La Morra sits “Tenuta Para”, a newly renovated winery now managed by Daniela, wife of the late Luigi Oddero. 

The storied history of wine-making here at Tenuta Para began here in 1869, when Luigi Para purchased what was then a bishop’s dining hall from the Diocese of Alba.  
Luigi Para was an entrepreneur that liked to experiment in agriculture, and his work with the Nebbiolo grape, in collaboration with the Alba School of Enology, led to many advances in the production of Barolo.  

The label of Tenuta Para depicts an observatory tower from which Mr. Para watched the workers in the vineyards.  It stands today as a reminder of the rich history of the estate.   

For nearly 50 years, Luigi, along with his brother Giacomo, managed the Oddero estate and Tenuta Para.  
They made Barolos under two labels at the Oddero estate, and Barberas and other wines at Tenuta Para.  
The Oddero family has vineyards in La Morra, where the wineries are located, in Serralunga (Vigna Rionda), and in Castiglione Falleto (Rocche Rivera). 

While for a time the Luigi Oddero label was an extension of Oddero, the two wineries now create expressions of all varietals independent of each other, though they source fruit from the same family vineyards.  
A complete renovation and modernization of Tenuta Para have allowed for this expansion, allowing both Giacomo at Oddero and Luigi at Tenuta Para to work together in two wineries.  
Unfortunately, Luigi recently passed away and left his holdings to his wife, Daniela, who manages the estate with the help of the Oddero family and trusted friends, such as Alberto Zaccarelli, who introduced us to the great wines of Luigi Oddero. 

Vigna Rionda is one of the most famous Crus in Barolo, with several key producers owning plots on this “Round Vineyard”.  This vineyard is the benchmark for Serralunga wines.  

These wines command high prices and can age for 20+ years without issue.  Luigi Oddero makes the Vigna Rionda Cru Barolo only in good vintages.  

It is said that Vigna Rionda has the best sun exposure, and the best ventilation in all of the Langhe.  

This enables the creation of complex, well-structured wines, and Luigi Oddero, along with his brother Giacomo, are recognized leaders in the creation of such Barolos.
