La Spinetta

Italy Piedmont Castagnole delle Lanze

La Spinetta seems to be both a rising star and a well-settled company.

Founded by Giuseppe ‘Pin’ and Lidia Rivetti in 1977 in the township of Castagnole Lanze, not far from Barbaresco, La Spinetta was once devoted to the production of Moscato d’Asti. It has grown since, sitting now among the most sought-after piedmontese estates.

The brothers Giorgio, Bruno, and Carlo dedicated to their father the first important red ever released by La Spinetta, Pin. It was the first piedmontese red to achieve accolades, though not bearing a strong appellation, a sort of ‘Superpiedmontese’.

Three different Barbarescos come from as many single-vineyard Crus in the communities of Neive and Treiso: Gallina, Starderi, and Valeirano. The Campé estate in Grinzane Cavour was bought and fully restored in 2000, from which was born the Barolo of the same name, the top wine in the lineup.

The La Spinetta di Casanova estate, nearby Pisa, is focused on indigenous local varieties, as has always been done in the Langhe.

The historical piedmontese sparkling house Contratto joined the holdings in 2011.

The state-of-the-art equipment serves as to enhance each single variety and terroir, which only the Langhe are blessed with, showing a deep care in the vineyard cultivation. Morro and Pipo are the two horses which are employed twice a year in the plowing between the rows in the best Crus. Most vineyards are grown with biodynamics.

Yelds are extraordinarily low, keeping only some 25% of the fruit. Modern presses and rotary fermenters precede -mostly new- french barriques in the vinification and ageing process.

The resulting wines are very concentrated and rich in aromas, endowed with lingering persistence, approachable yet age-worthy.
