Poderi Aldo Conterno

Italy Piedmont Monforte d'Alba

In a small winemaking farm located in Monforte d'Alba, Giovanni Conterno worked along side his father Giuseppe in the production of local wine. Giovanni helped increase the production, to be sold in casks not only in Piemonte and Liguria but also as far as America. As a result, the demand for these wines grew rapidly. Giovanni then felt the need to create a superior Barolo, to be produced exclusively from the best vintages, and capable of lasting over time. In the 1920s the first Barolo reserve was bottled. At the end of the '30s Giovanni handed over the reins of the business to his son, Giacomo, who continued his father's tradition with commitment and foresight. During these years, his sons Giovanni and Aldo began to assist and follow their father in running the business. In 1961, Giovanni and Aldo began to run the estate. However, Aldo had a desire to establish a business of his own. It was for this reason that he decided, after working for a considerable time alongside his brother, to carry out the dream. He then bought the "Favot" farm and founded the estate "Poderi Aldo Conterno" in 1969.

Nowdays few wineries in Italy are as revered as Poderi Aldo Conterno. From 1969 until his death in May 2012 Aldo Conterno led his eponymously named winery from foundation to become one of the most respected producers in Piedmont (North West Italy) and the winery belongs in a list of the greatest wineries in the whole of Italy.

Succeeded by his sons Franco, Giacomo and Stefano at helm of the Poderi Aldo Conterno winery, the winery is best known for its range of five Barolo, although Chardonnay, Barbera and Dolcetto are also produced. This simply named Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo is the “entry level” Barolo of the Poderi Aldo Conterno range.

Poderi Aldo Conterno is situated in Bussia, which is the very heart of the typical area of Barolo wine. At present, the farm, which vinifies exclusively its own grapes, consists of about 25 hectares of vineyard. Whilst three of the five Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo are single vineyard “cru” wines, both this “basic” Aldo Conterno Barolo and the range topping Aldo Conterno “Granbussia” Barolo are made from a selection of Nebbiolo grapes drawn from multiple vineyard sites within Monforte d’Alba.
