The name of Royal Réserve goes back to the ancestors of the Philipponnat family, vineyard owners, wine-merchants and winemakers, suppliers to Louis XIV, magistrates and Royal Mayors of Ay.

The essential characteristics of the Mareuil- sur-Ay terroir, where mainly Pinot Noir grapes are grown, are predominant in this cuvée. It offers a superb balance between structure, vinosity and a long nish. 

The NV Royale Reserve is wonderfully creamy and generous on the palate. Green apples, pears and white flowers are all layered into the expressive finish. This is a delicious entry-level Champagne to drink now and over the next few years. The current release is based on the 2007 vintage, with the addition of 26% reserve wines. Dosage was 8 grams per liter. - Wine Advocate

The Philipponnat family had been growing grapes and vinifying wine in the Marne Valley from the mid-19th century until Pierre and Auguste Philipponnat relocated to the 18th century cellars of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ in 1910. Two years later, they appointed chef de culture, Louis Boland, the man who sagely advised Philippe Philipponnat to purchase “Les Goisses” that had been virtually abandoned since the First World War. 
Philipponnat decided to bottle the wines separately and this little-known Champagne was labeled “Vin de Goisses” or “Les Goisses” until Raymond Beaudoin, who founded Revue du Vins des France, proposed its present title. 

The house of Philipponnat - which owns 44 prime acres in and around Mareuil-sur-Ay, its base of operations ever since having completed a new press house and cellar there in 2004 - is headed by Charles Philipponat, although it's owned by the group that controls Champagne Bruno Paillard Philipponnat. 
Philipponnat is primarily a Pinot Noir house, and its vineyards are in prime Pinot Noir territory: Mareuil sur Aÿ, Aÿ, Avenay, and Mutigny. However, all cuvées contain at least 30% Chardonnay for freshness. Its 20 hectares of vineyards represent about a third of its total needs, with the rest being bought in from growers. 

Production is currently around 600–700 000 bottles a year and quality is impeccable across the range.
The world renowned flagship, Clos des Goisses, is fashioned from a self-owned single “cru” of steep hillsides facing south, one of the only two in the world. Produced only in exceptional vintages by the strictest standard of the cellar masters, Clos des Goisses is blessed with unparalleled richness, power, length, complexity, and ageing potential, a wine in the truest sense of form.
There's high demand for this low volume wine and it ages magnificently well.
