Sandrone Luciano

Italy Piedmont Barolo

Sandrone is a family-run wine maker and farmer established in 1978. The total area is 16 hectares, which is completely covered by vines. 2.5 of them are planted with Nebbiolo grapes for the production of Barolo Cannubi Boschis, 3 hectares are planted with Nebbiolo grapes for the production of Barolo Le Vigne, 2.5 hectares are planted with Barbera grapes for the production of Barbera d'Alba, 5 hectares are planted with Dolcetto grapes for the production of Dolcetto d'Alba and last but not least 3 hectares are planted with Nebbiolo grapes for the production of Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore.

Sandrone prefers to produce a limited quantity of grapes per vine to be able to obtain a higher concentration of the constituents characterizing wine quality. He also tends to reduce vine parasite treatments and only uses organic fertilisers. Also he want to control production according to the season trend and determine the best ripening point, when the grapes should be harvested. This is obtained by taking samples during the ripening phase in order to harvest and vinify vineyard after vineyard according to the grapes ripening. A very soft pressing is carried out in our cellars with a simple picking- pressing machine. The pressed grapes immediately start to ferment thanks to indigenous yeasts. During fermentation temperature and extraction process are kept under control. Maceration times are shorter than the traditional ones.

Some wines are then refined in French oak casks in a capacity ranging from 600 to 700 litres for a period that depends on wine sort and vintage. Then Barbera d'Alba is bottled and rests for a further period of 6 to 8 months, while Barolo rests in the bottles for another 24 months' period.

His most famous wines are his 2 Barolos, Cannubi Boschis (Aleste starting from 2013 vintage) and Le Vigne. They are amongst the most supple and complex Barolos being produced today and few would argue against their almost iconic status. Elegant, attractive and easy to appreciate right from their first years in bottle, but with no less power and structure than traditional Barolos.

Extraordinary producers of Barolo, Luciano Sandrone and his wife worked at Marchesi di Barolo before acquiring a tiny plot of land outside their native village of Barolo in 1977. Theirs quickly became a cult wine, first with their 1982 and 1985 vintages. Then they made a wine that merited one of the first perfect scores I ever gave a Barolo, the 1990. There is attention to detail in the vineyard and in the winery at every level, and the results are wines that are hybrid creations, paying respect to both progressives and traditionalists.” - Robert Parker

Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading lights in Piedmont. No grower has managed to so brilliantly reconcile modern and traditional approaches in making wines that are soft, supple and approachable when young, but also capable of aging beautifully.” - Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, November 2007
