Maffrei was born from the deep bond between Andrea and Stefano Mascarello, two brothers raised among the rolling hills of La Morra and Verduno, within a historic Piedmontese winemaking family. The name itself reflects both their roots and identity: “Ma” from Mascarello and “Frei”, meaning “brothers” in the Piedmont dialect.
After gaining experience in their family estate, the two decided to strike out on their own to create a project that felt more personal — fresh, contemporary, yet deeply rooted in the traditions and values of their land.
Thus, in 2021, Maffrei was born: not just a new winery, but a declaration of intent. That same year, they purchased a farmhouse on the hilltop of La Morra, overlooking the sandy vineyards that today form the core of their production.
In addition to the historic Torriglione cru — planted by their grandfather and destined to produce the first Barolo Maffrei in 2026 — Andrea and Stefano cultivate high-altitude Dolcetto vineyards in Diano d’Alba and their highest parcel in Serradenari, within the La Morra commune.
Today, Maffrei covers 3.6 hectares of vineyards with an annual production of around 11,000 bottles. Each wine is crafted through a hands-on, thoughtful approach, with fermentation in stainless steel and an uncompromising focus on purity and expression.
Nebbiolo remains the soul of the estate, Dolcetto honors family tradition, while since 2023, a new Langhe Bianco — blending Riesling, Arneis, and Nascetta — has joined the lineup, standing out for its brightness and originality.
The energy of the Mascarello brothers shines through in every detail: in their wines, their work, and their vision. Young, skilled, and passionate, they carry forward their own interpretation of the Langhe with both curiosity and respect, guided by the experience of their father and uncle.
With 2021 as their debut vintage and a clear sense of direction for the years ahead, Maffrei embodies the new generation of La Morra — authentic, bold, and full of life.
